x. 关系副词why, that

1. 先行词是reason并在从句中作原因状语时，用关系副词why引导从句，why=for which。

That's the reason why I didn't come to school.

那就是我没有来上学的原因。

I can never understand the reason why/for which he did that foolish thing.

我永远也不可能明白他为什么做了那件傻事。

2. 先行词是reason但是在从句中作主语或某些动词如explain, remember, forget等的宾语时，不能用why引导从句，这时要用that或which引导从句。

I can never understand the reason that/which he explained to me.

我永远也不理解他向我解释的原因。

3. that有时可用作关系副词，代替where, when或why引导从句，并且可以省略。

That was the year (that= in which) he was born.

他就是那年出生的。

This is the reason (that= for which) he didn't come.

这就是他没有来的原因。

4. 先行词是the way并在从句中作方式状语时，用in which/that引导从句或者不用关系词。不能用how引导从句。

This is the way (that=by which) we came last time.

这就是我们上次来的方式。

I don't like the way (that= in which) she looks at me.

我不喜欢她看我的那种方式。
