Brian: Do you think I'm crazy? I just quit the Student Council. I don't want to be so busy. I gave up a good chance of

getting scholarships for that.

布莱恩：你觉得我疯了吗？我刚从学生会退出来，我可不想那么忙了。我已经因为学生会的事儿放弃了获奖学金的大好机会了。

May: Joining the Volunteers' League won't take you much time. It only has activities on the weekends. Come on, you won't

regret about joining this club. It's different from other student clubs or unions.

梅：加入志愿者联盟不会占用你太多时间的。只是在周末有活动。来吧，参加这个社团你不会后悔的。同其他的学生社团或协会不一样。

Brian: What's the difference?

布莱思：有什么不一样啊？

May: We can do something for the community in Beijing. Isn't that special? You can also learn a lot in the Volunteers'

League. You will have a chance to learn how to

communicate, how to arrange an activity and how to

cooperate with your group members.

梅：我们可以为北京的社区做一些事情。这不是很特别吗？同时你也可以学到很多东西。你将有机会学习怎样交流，怎样组织安排活动，以及

怎样和队友们合作。

Brian: Oh, it means that I will have a good chance to practice my Chinese. You win. Just tell me how to get enrolled for

that club.

布莱思：哦，这就意味着我有机会来练习我的汉语了。你把我说服了。告诉我怎么参加吧。

1.“student council”相当于“student government”，意为“（中学或大学的）学生会”。

2.“give up a chance of...”意为“放弃一个…的机会”。

3.“have a chance to do..”相当于“have an opportunity to do...”，意为“有机会做…”。另外，“chance”还可以表达“可能性”，

比如“have/stand a chance of(doing;)sth．”，则表示“有…的可能”。例如: If we did move to London, I'd stand a much better

chance of getting a job.（如果我们搬到伦敦，我找到工作的可能性会更大。）Ireland have an outside chance ( slight chance ) of

qualifying for the World Cup.（爱尔兰获得世界杯参赛资格的可能性很小。）

国外团协会是什么样

学生社团，在国外通常叫作Student Club（学生俱乐部）或Student Association（学生联盟）。在国外，学生社团和学校几乎没有任何关系，它们的直系“上级”是学生会，而学生会也同样是学生们自己组织的团体，学生会负责人通常由自愿投票的学生们选出，他们担任这个重要职位之后，并不用听从校方的指挥，他们只为学生办事。说到职责，那他们的工作可多啦，比如在庆典上、开学时组织学生狂欢游行：学费高涨时，可以组织学生去校长办公楼外游行请愿等。

校内任何一人都可以组织社团，只要你对某种事物感兴趣，就可以去学生会报名建立社团。举个例子，如果你喜欢厨艺，你便可以申请一个Cooking Club（烹饪社）。俱乐部建好之后，你可以跟学生会申请宣传摊位，在新学期到来之际扩展招人，或者通过朋友介绍，招募学校里来自各个国家的同学。

也许大家觉得，烹饪社并不稀奇。但有些社团大家一定没有参加或者听说过。以多伦多大学为例，那里有潜水社(Diving Club)，帆船运动社(Sailing Club)，侧影轮廓舞蹈连(Silhouettes Dance Company )，王氏社团(The Wang's Club)，孤独症学生社交联盟 ( Social Association for Students with Autism,简称SASA ) ，南亚联盟（South Asian Alliance．简称SAA ）。斯巴达克思青年社( Spartacus Youth Club)，华人大学生联谊会(Chinese UndergradAssociation）等多个有意思的社团。

在经费方面，欧美的学生社团都是由自己筹款或向学生会申请款项，而学生会的资金也是由各方公司赞助或自己筹集的。
