first and foremost首先，首要的
First and foremost可以做形容词使用，也可以做副词使用。它的字面意思是“第一和首位的”，第一位和首位的自然也就是我们所说的“首要的”，所以first and foremost就被引申为“首先，首要的”的意思。例如：First and foremost I want to thank our hosts for their wonderful reception.（首先，要感谢主人的盛情接待。）

have somebody over a barrel完全支配某人
Have somebody over a barrel字面意思是“把某人放在大木桶上”，其引申义为“完全支配某人”。听说早期美国人在抢救快要淹死的人时，会把溺水者放在一个大木桶上面（over a barrel），让他脸朝下，然后慢慢转动大木桶，帮助他把水吐出来，这样溺水者就会从昏迷中苏醒过来。
因为溺水者完全任人摆布。于是就产生了“把某人放在大木桶上”（have somebody over a barrel）的词汇，比喻“任人宰割”，“仰人鼻息”，或者“迫使某人乖乖地就范”的意思。例如：Jill had Rachel over a barrel because Rachel needed her aid.（吉尔完全控制蕾切尔，因为雷切尔需要他的援助。）
