过去进行时主要表示过去某一时刻或某一阶段正在发生或进行的动作。

1．表示过去某一时刻内正在进行或发生的动作，常与at 7 o'clock ，at that time 等表示具体时间的短语连用。

Mike was writing a letter at that time. 迈克那时正在写信。

2．表示过去某一段时间内一直在进行的动作，常与last week ，last year 等表示一段时间的短语连用。

The baby was playing with a doll last week. 上个星期这个宝宝一直在玩一个布娃娃。

3．表示一个动作发生时，另一个动作正在进行。
