The kind of dancing called ballet began in Italy about 500 years ago．You go to a theatre to see ballet which tells a story using music and dance．You need to be very graceful and athletic to be a good ballet dancer．Ballet developed greatly in France about 350 years ago and dancers all over the world still call all the movements by their French names．

In England，many children as young as 3 or 4 years old go to weekly ballet classes to develop graceful movement and to learn to move in time to music．Children who want to become ballet dancers as a job need to start learning ballet seriously by the time they are 10．

The Royal Ballet School in London is famous and children interested in ballet dream of being able to go there．The School holds several auditions every year where they choose suitable children to train as ballet dancers．Auditions take a whole day and about 1,000 children go to the auditions every year．The children，usually aged about 10 or 11，are given numbers to pin on their clothes and，in a group，they copy the movements made by a teacher．Ballet teachers watch the children carefully and choose the children who have a suitable shape，some natural talent and who very much want to learn．

Children from many countries can go to the Royal Ballet School．Children who do not live in Great Britain send a video of themselves dancing and if they are very good，they may be asked to travel to London for an audition．

Every year，only 14 boys and 21 girls are chosen to go to the Royal Ballet School．
