By chance they emerge in a dream，

Turning out infinite new patterns.

It's all ordinary feelings，

All ordinary words.

By chance they encounter a poet，

Turning out infinite new verses.

Once intoxicated, one learns the strength of wine，

Once smitten, one learns the power of love：

You cannot write my poems

Just as I cannot dream your dreams.

都是平常经验，

都是平常影象，

偶然涌到梦中来，

变幻出多少新奇花样！

都是平常情感，

都是平常言语，

偶然碰着个诗人，

变幻出多少新奇诗句！

醉过才知酒浓，

爱过才知情重；

你不能做我的诗，

正如我不能做你的梦。

背景知识

胡适（1891-1962），安徽绩溪上庄村人。他集现代著名诗人、历史家、文学家和哲学家于一身，且因提倡文学革命而成为新文化运动的领袖之一。

这是一首节奏明快、主题明确的哲理诗。梦和诗是相对独立的概念，也许在一般人看来，找不出任何关联，而在作者眼中，做诗和做梦却是相通的：我做我的诗，你做你梦，只有投身其中，才能体会到乐趣。诗和梦可以相互引用，却不能取而代之。
