Taking attendance
On my first day of classes at my University I took a front-row seat in my literature course.
The professor told us we would be responsible for reading five books, and that he would provide us with a list of authors from which we could choose. Then he ambled over to the lectern , took out his class book and began, "Baker, Black, Brooks, Carter, Cook..."
I was working feverishly to get down all the names when I felt a tap on my shoulder. The student in back of me whispered, "He's taking attendance ."

1. The professor told us we would be responsible for reading five books, and that he would provide us with a list of authors from which we could choose.
The professor told us…。us后面的内容都是told的宾语,其中we would be responsible for reading five books是省略了that的宾语从句,在宾语从句that he would provide us with a list of authors from which we could choose中又包含了一个由介词from+which引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰a list of authors。
2. I was working feverishly to get down all the names when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
I'll call you when I get there.
Don't get excited when you talk.
