    son of a bitching(-in’)(加强语气)

    Bitch一字可当名词、形容词、副词、及物动词和不及物动词。当名词时,后可随of的短语,亦可随动词不定式(infinitive);当形容词时,加后缀-ness使之成为名词,具“刻薄、恶意”等的性质或状态;当副词时,后随形容词,意为“很”,“很够”,“极”;当不及物动词时,后随介词about、at;当及物动词时,常系副词-up (注意连字“-”符号)。当强化比喻用时,以动词或比较级形容词冠之,除含有讽刺语气,表非凡人或物外,余均含负面意义——表“讨厌,贱,可憎”等。Son of a bitch 当名词时,除骂男人为“狗东西”,“狗娘养的”,“畜生”,“混蛋”,“可怜虫”等外,也当“费解的事”或“难办的事”解;当感叹词时,是“真泄气”,“吓死人” (表示 disappointment 或 surprise),其口语变化字是son-ovabitch,或缩写成“s.o.b.”。Bitch及son of a bitch 虽是通俗语,在一般非正式场合可以使用,但仕人淑女仍应避免。

    Bitch 当名词时——骂女人,咒事物

    1. the bitch,a bitch 坏女人、被讥笑的女子;泛指女子,骚货

    A. She whacked1 the old bird for his insurance money,then ran off with a younger guy.

    她为了那怪老头的保险金而谋害他后,勾搭上一个年轻小伙子跑掉了。

    B. The bitch. May-December marriages2 do sometimes end up3 like that.

    贱女人!老夫少妻的婚姻有时就是如此下场。

    注:

    1. whacked 重击,用力打。此处乃俚语的“谋害”之意。

    2. May-December marriage 指男女年龄悬殊的婚姻——老夫少妻。

    3. do…end up end up(vi+adv)是“告终,收场,结束”。此句重音在do上,do是情态助动词,用来强调后面的动词。有“的确会如此地……”“常常会这样……”之意。

    A. (Store owner’s wife) Here come the motorcycle gang and their bitches.

    (店主的太太)飙车族和他们的娘们来了。

    B. (Store owner) Go inside. I don’t want any trouble from them.

    (店主)进去吧,我不想惹麻烦。

    2. a bitch 笨重物——如“船只、大卡车;激怒人的讨厌东西”

    A. Stretch limousines are great status symbols.

    长体礼车很能代表身份。

    B. But they are a bitch to park.

    4. a bitch 非凡的,了不起的,意外的,或惊奇的人、事、物

    注:

    1. the very day = the day when… 是关系副词,连接两个从句。very在此是形容词,表“就在那同一”,“恰好是”之意。

    5. a bitch 抱怨

    A. My boss is great. When I have a bitch,he’s always willing to listen.

    我的老板很好。每当我有抱怨时,他都肯倾听。

    B. Unfortunately,mine isn’t.

    可惜,我的老板就不肯了。

    6. bitchiness 具刻薄或恶意的状态或性质

    A. I detected a tinge of bitchiness in her voice.

    我发现她话中有点带刺。

    B. She must be upset about something。

    她一定是对什么事情不满。

    Bitch 当形容词、副词、动词时

    1. 当形容词时——加 ing(in’)成为bitching(bitchin’),意为:“非常大的,范围广的;好极了,特棒,特别漂亮的(学生用语)”;加-y 成为 bitchy,意为:“刻薄的,有恶意的,艰苦的,难的”;“有诱惑力的”

    A. I never thought you’d make it.

    我想你一定赶不来了。

    B. Neither did I. All planes were grounded because of1 a bitchin’ typhoon.

    我也是认为来不及了。大台风袭境,飞机都停飞了。

    注:

    1. because of 由于……原因,是介词短语(preposition phrase)。本身是由介词合成 (prepositional phrase),而又当介词用,不像on the increase是当形容词用,at times 当副词用。

    A. She had a car like mine. A bitchin’ BMW.

    她从前的车跟我的一样,一部很漂亮的宝马。

    B. Her dad gave it to her on her 18th birthday.

    是她过十八岁生日时她老爸送的。

    A. The photographs he took in Hawaii are bitchin’.

    他在夏威夷拍的照片真漂亮。

    B. Yeah. Especially those sunset shots.

    是啊!尤其是日落的那些照片。

    A. I like to attend fashion shows.

    我喜欢参加服装展示会。

    B. Me too. You can watch1 the models strike those bitching poses.

    注:

    1. watch 在此为及物动词,加了宾语且可跟动词原形(主动)或过去分词(被动),作宾语的补语。watch 这样的动词叫使役动词 (causative verbs),为数不多,如 have,get,help,make 等。

    A. Some jokes about President Clinton are really bitchy.

    攻击克林顿总统的笑话有些真刻薄。

    B. But his job-approval rating1 is at an all-time high2.

    可是他的工作评价已达最高峰。

    注:

    1. job-approval rating 工作评价(此处是由民意调查抽样获得)。

    2. at an all-time high 达最高峰(指自克林顿任总统以来)。此处 high 是名词。

    A. That was a bitchy red number1 she wore to the award ceremony.

    她参加颁奖典礼时穿了一件很迷人的红色服装。

    B. It was designed especially for her.

    是专门为她设计的。

    注:

    1. number在此处当“服装”解,不是“数字”。Number 除了当数字解外,亦当“有诱惑力的异性”解,如 Who’s the hot number in the pink miniskirt?(穿粉红色迷你裙的那个诱人的妞是谁啊?);In the lead role was a tall,dark number. (黑黑的高个子演男主角。);number 也当“一对情侣”解,如 His sister and Mark have been a number for months now. (他的妹妹和马克是一对情侣已经有几个月了。);另当“例行工作或任务”解,如 She gets paid nicely for just doing her number (她只做她的例行工作也赚不少钱。);Watch how she does her number in the play. (看她如何扮演戏里的角色。);复数 numbers 当“非法摸彩”解,如 He got three years for his involvement in the numbers racket. (他参与非法摸彩活动被判三年徒刑)。此外有number one products(一流的产品),a number one performance(一流的演出)等。

    A. (About a certain movie star) She’s played many bitchy roles. But she has no regets。

    (谈某电影明星)她演的角色有很多是难演的,但她无怨无悔。

    B. If only I had her money1!

    但愿我有她那么多的钱!

    注:

    1. If only I had her money 是现在时的假设句(present subjunctive mood),用过去简单动词 had 表述现在的空想,过去时的假设用 had+P.P.。

    2. 当副词用时——后随形容词或副词,意为“很、够、极为”

    A. Houston gets bitchin’ muggy in the summer.

    夏天休士顿闷热得难受。

    B. But afternoon showers help1 cool things off.

    但午后下过阵雨就会凉快些。

    注:

    1. help 此一及物动词后不论有无宾语均可跟不定式免去“to”(infinitive without“to”),句中的cool off便是原形的动词短语。

    3. 当动词时——后随副词、名词、介词短语,有“抱怨、训斥、责骂、寻花问柳,弄坏、糟蹋、欺骗”诸意

    A. If everyone spent half as much time writing complimentary letters about their favorite authors instead of bitching about the crap1 they don’t like,I’m sure everyone,authors and readers alike (editors don’t count;they thrive on controversy),would smile a little more.

    如果大家多投稿称赞最喜爱的作家,少投稿抱怨不喜欢的狗屁文章,那样,作家和读者都会快乐些(编辑不算,这些人靠争论走红)。

    注:

    1. crap 是“废话”或“狗屁不通的文章”(nonsense,rubbish);也指“粪便”,如 take a crap (大便);当不及物动词时,是“拉屎”,如 The baby crapped in his diaper. (婴儿拉屎在尿布上。)

    A. What are they bitching about?

    他们在抱怨什么?

    B. Same old stuff. Long hours,low pay,poor working conditions.

    还不是老套:工作时间过长,工资太低,工作环境又差。

    A. You could hear his mom bitching at him1 clear across the street.

    对街都听得见他妈妈在训他。

    B. She should tone it down2 a little. It gets embarrassing.

    她不应该这样吼叫,听起来令人不安。

    注:

    1. hear… bitching at him 在 hear,see,feel,watch 少数及物动词加宾语后可跟现在分词短语,做宾语补足语(objective complement),表示正在进行中,也可跟不定词免“to”,表示曾发生之事。

    2. tone (it) down 调低[收音机,讲话等]音量,另有tone down one’s anger or criticism (缓和愤怒或批评)等。

    A. She bitches and moans1 all day. Doesn’t matter about what.

    她不管为了什么事,整天都抱怨不已。

    B. Maybe she should see a psychiatrist.

    也许她应该去看看心理医生吧。

    注:

    1. bitch and moan 抱怨,这两个不及物动词常联合使用。

    A. Politicians who go bitching1 are eventually exposed.

    寻花问柳的政客终会被揭发。

    B. Their career inevitably goes down the tubes2.

    这些人的政治生涯必然完蛋。

    注:

    1. go bitching 做“寻花问柳”之事。go后的V-ing多为运动及购物,go有linking verb的功能,如 go mad(疯了),go bad(坏了)等,故go后面的V-ing有人主张是现在分词。

    2. go down the tubes (俚)等于 ruined。此语与冲浪有关,tube指大浪头卷起时形成的空道就像水管管道,故有“冲下”、“冲走”、“毁灭”之意。

    A. Don’t bitch-up my project with any of your wacky ideas.

    别乱出馊主意,搞坏我这个计划。

    B. But boss,didn’t you say you wanted to save money?

    可是老板啊,你不是说过要省钱吗?

    A. He tried to bitch me out of $10,000.

    Bitch 当强化比喻时——跟随在as a…,like a…,than a…之后,形成副词短语,表示“特……”,“极……”

    B. Put on an extra pair of gloves.

    多戴一副手套吧!

    A. It ran like a bitch when we chased it.

    我们追它时,它跑得特别快。

    B. Did you finally catch it?

    最后抓到了没有?

    Bitch 当名词——指“困扰的是……”,“障碍在……”

    Son of a Bitch 骂男人,咒事

    A. (Sees1 a guy getting into his car and driving it off) Hey! You son of a bitch2! Come back here with my car!

    注:

    1. sees…是when he sees…的口语化,省去了主语。

    2. You son of a bitch 是 You are the son of a bitch的口语化,且更有力,如对方是多数人时,须为 you sons of bitches。

    1. The guy who shot me? 注意这种口语简化的句型。完全的句型是 Who is the guy who shot me?

    2. did 是黑道俚语,作“杀死”,“干掉”解。

    1. 此句 get this car+过去分词 started,就是前面说的宾语的被动式补语。只有get,have,see,hear,watch 等及物动词有此特性。
