The hard may not be strong,

刚者不坚牢，

While the soft may last long

柔底难摧挫。

Look into my open mouth if you think me wrong:

不信张开口角看，

The teeth are lost before the tongue.

舌在牙先堕。

Side teeth all gone, behold!

已阙两边厢，

I lose a middle one anew.

又豁中间个。

I tell the young not to laugh at the old;

说与儿曹莫笑翁，

I’ll pass through the dog’s hole with you.
