autumn thoughts

Shu Ting

 

autumn journeys relentlessly on the leaves day and night

the hour strikes

then grows old

and yellow; it

drifts down

 

we its hostages are swept along

unable to call for help

unwilling to give up the struggle

we hear in our hearts

chaos  disorder

swarms of wasps in fury

surrounding

a wild haw past its flowering

 

the path behind us turned cold and dim

we know nothing can be recovered

yet out of habit our eyes linger on the twisting path

the cypress vine has put out small flowers

the roots you have shed

climb up my heart with a piercing pain

every minute you touch turns into the past

before the giant palm

reaches you

think again

you still cannot go home

 

you may go this way

or that way

at the last we shall meet

autumn makes us full

in the end we shall burst open

like ripened pea-pods
