    Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled What Makes an Ideal Class ? You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words according to the following guidelines:

    There are still significant differences between a Chinese class and a western one.

    Which kind of classes do you like most? And what’s your ideal class?

    What Makes an Ideal Class?

    Due to cultural diversity, there are distinct differences between a Chinese class and a western one. A western class is usually given in a relaxed and lively atmosphere, where the class is centered on students and at the same time, teachers mainly act as a guide. In contrast 1 , Chinese teachers traditionally focus more on imparting knowledge and skills to their students in class and a typical Chinese class generally involves less interaction, especially one-on-one interaction, between teachers and students. It’s hard to say which one is superior to the other due to different social background.

    In my opinion, an ideal class should take three factors into consideration: teacher, student and atmosphere. 2 First of all 3 , a teacher’s main task is to guide students to learn but not to cram his students. Secondly 3 , classes should be student-oriented. Students’ interests and requirements are the focus of the class. Furthermore 3 , the atmosphere should be lively, relaxed, friendly and orderly. Everyone should participate in the discussion actively and give full play to his subjective initiative in the class.

    To sum up, an ideal class is one that can coordinate the relationship among these three factors. 4

    理想中的课堂是什么样的?

    由于文化差异,中西方课堂之间存在着巨大的不同。西方课堂氛围一般来说轻松又活泼,课堂以学生为中心,同时,教师主要扮演引导者的角色。相比之下,中国的教师传统上更加注重在课堂上向学生传授知识和技能,而且在一个典型的中国课堂上,师生互动,尤其是一对一的互动普遍较少。由于社会背景不同,很难说哪一种课堂更加优越。

    我个人认为,一节理想的课应该考虑三个因素:教师、学生、课堂气氛。首先,教师的主要任务是引导学生学习而不是填鸭式教育。第二,课堂应该以学生为中心。学生的兴趣及要求是课堂的重点。此外,课堂气氛应该是活泼、轻松、友好并有秩序的。每一个人都要积极参与讨论,充分调动自己的主观能动性。

    总之,一堂好的课需要协调好这三者之间的关系。
