Justine: And why do you want to work at the Plaza Hotel?
鲍勃： 这是因为广场酒店的声誉极佳，不仅是因为它的服务水准，同时它也是一个愉快的工作场所。
Bob: Because it has a great reputation… not just for its service,but as a good place to work.
杰斯丁刚才所问的问题是招聘面试中出现频率非常高的一个问题。雇主希望通过这个问题获知你到底对他的生意有多少了解。鲍勃对这个问题的回答比较笼统，但是还可以接受。在你的实际生活中，你可以根据自己的实际情况对这个问题做出更加详尽的回答。例如，你可以列举这家酒店所吸引的顾客群体的情况等等。现在让我们一起再听一遍这部份的录音，请在鲍勃的话之后跟着重复。
Justine: Come in, Bob. I’m Justine Asker, the manager. You can call me, Justine.
Bob: Pleased to meet you.
Justine: Sit down. Firstly, Bob, can I ask which job you are applying for?
Bob: I’m applying for the receptionist position.
Justine: I see that you have a Diploma in Hospitality. Have you done any front desk work before?
Bob: I have work experience in front desk. You have my supervisor’s
report there. This will be my first paid position.
Justine: And why do you want to work at the Plaza Hotel?
Bob: Because it has a great reputation… not just for its service,but as a good place to work.
Justine: I’m glad to hear it.

Justine: Bob, what strengths do you think you would bring to the job?

Bob: Oh, ah. I am patient and I’ve been told I put clients at ease.
杰斯丁： 噢，是这样。那么你觉得你有什么缺点吗?
Justine: Uh huh.. And what do you see as your weaknesses?
鲍勃： 您的意思是说有什么事情是我所不擅长的吗?
Bob: Do you mean, what am I not so good at?
杰斯丁： 是的。
Justine: Yes.
鲍勃： 嗯，目前来看我的英语理解能力比我的口语能力要好得多。不过我仍然在家中自学，而且我希望这份工作也能够给更多我学习的机会。
Bob: Well, I understand English much better than I speak it at the
moment. But I study at home and I look forward to learning
more on the job.
杰斯丁： 这很好。
Justine: Excellent.
很多时候，我们在谈及自己的优点时可能都会有些不自在。不过这在寻工面试的时候是必须的，因为雇主希望了解你自己认为在哪些方面适合于你所应征的工作。在这种情况下，你不需要自吹自擂，你只要列举出一、两项自己适合于这一工作的优点和长处就可以了。而在谈到自己的缺点时，雇主也往往希望你能够对自己有一个正确的认识。不过你在回答这方面的问题时千万不要列举有可能导致你应征失败的缺点，比如说自己会习惯性地上班迟到，或者经常在工作中忘东忘西等等。最好的回答就是列举出一项可以将其转化为积极因素的“缺点”。让我们来听听鲍勃是怎么说的。
鲍勃： 嗯，目前来看我的英语理解能力比我的口语能力要好得多。不过我仍在家中自学，而且我希望这份工作能够给我更多学习的机会。

Bob: Well, I understand English much better than I speak it at the moment. But I study at home and I look forward to learning more on the job.
您听出来了吗?鲍勃就是这样将自己的缺点转化成了应征工作时的一个积极因素。他通过这样的说法首先承认自己有不足的地方，同时又说明自己愿意改进。哪一个雇主会有理由不雇用这样的员工呢?
在接下来的课文中，请注意当鲍勃没有完全明白杰斯丁提出的问题时他是如何回应的。
杰斯丁： 你觉得你有什么缺点吗?
Justine: And what do you see as your weaknesses?
鲍勃： 您的意思是说有什么事情是我所不擅长的吗?
Bob: Do you mean, what am I not so good at?
杰斯丁： 是的。
Justine: Yes.
在这种情况下，鲍勃原本可以要求杰斯丁rephrase 她的问题，也就是说请杰斯丁换一个说法提出她的问题。但是鲍勃想表明自己可以用自己的方式去理解杰斯丁的问题。所以他用了这样一个短语来开始他的问话： Do you mean……? 您的意思是说。。?请跟着老师一起来练习这个句子。
Do you mean…?
Do you mean what am I not so good at? Rephrase.
Could you rephrase that please?
