[00:11.94]At Debbie's school, students can write to the teacher counsellor

[00:18.89]about their problems as well as speak to her.

[00:48.74]It smashed on the ground below, narrowly missing some children at play.

[00:56.11]However,we could see that no one was hurt,

[01:01.07]so we said nothing and left for the movies as planned.

    [01:07.03]Returning home later that evening,

[01:11.39]my friend learned that the police had been to the flats

[01:17.17]and questioned all the tenants present.

[01:21.82]They had even taken the son of one tenant to the police station.

[01:28.35]After questioning him, they let him go temporarily.

[01:34.51]Frightened of losing her job in the civil service,

[01:39.94]my friend has said nothing to the police.

[01:44.49]Although no one was injured,I have a guilty conscience and ...

[01:51.57]2 Late last night, while traveling home by train.

[01:59.12]I saw three tough guys enter my almost empty carriage.

[02:06.77]Sitting down beside a young boy who was travelling alone,

[02:13.85]they began to tease and bully him.

[02:18.89]Their behaviour was so bad that it made him move to another seat.

    [02:27.15]That did no good.

[02:30.60]They just followed him and continued their bullying.

    [02:36.47]The boy was obviously frightened.

[02:41.15]At this point,I got off at my station and walked home,

    [02:47.99]feeling sorry for the boy.

    [02:52.15]I wanted to help him,

    [02:55.80]but not being Superman and hating violence,what could I do?Should I...?

[03:06.25]3 The check out assistant at my usual supermarket is always rude and unhelpful.

[03:18.32]When I gave her a five-hundred dollar note to pay for an eight dollar purchase,

    [03:27.99]she was so busy grumbling

[03:32.45]that she accidentally gave me an extra hundred-dollar note in my change.

[03:42.30]On discovering the error,I went back to tell her about it.

    [03:50.56]'Excuse me,'I said.

    [03:54.32]But before I could continue,she barked,

[04:00.27]'Can't you see there's a queue?Go to the end and wait your turn.'

[04:07.72]That did it!I left the shop with the hundred dollars and a clear conscience.

[04:17.28]I had done my best, before leaving,to correct the error. But ...

[11:34.65]A letter from the teacher counsellor

    [11:38.20]Dear Friends

[11:40.94]Thank you very much for your letters.

[11:44.91]Since the three of you have expressed more or less the same problem of having a guilty conscience

[11:52.18]I would like to share with you some general view

[11:57.22]on the matter here in our Teacher Counsellor's Corner.

[12:01.89]I expect to meet you each next week during my office hours.

[12:07.22]I must say that I am pleased to read your letters.

[12:11.87]And from what you have described about the flower pot that dropped accidentally

    [12:17.83]from the high rise,

[12:20.89]the ugly guys who teased and bullied the little boy on the train,

[12:26.34]and the rude and careless cashier at the supermarket,

[12:31.91]I have the sure feeling that you are all very honest and good students.

[12:39.07]Clearly,you have a fair and sensible judgement

[12:44.63]about the things that happen around you.

    [12:48.60]And this is very important.

[12:52.15]I understand that you were not quite sure about how to react properly in those situations

[12:59.60]and you still feel sorry for that.

[13:03.67]In my opinion, your weakness may lie in a kind of hesitation

[13:10.13]and lack of courage in unexpected incidents.

[13:15.19]In other words,if you had been a little more courageous

[13:21.15] and more confident about yourselves,

[13:25.59]you would have shown more strength and wisdom.

[13:29.74]Dear friends,if a guilty conscience has made you reflect upon your past failure

[13:37.40]I believe that careful thinking together with continuous effort

[13:44.03]will certainly bring you more positive and successful solutions in the future

[13:50.49]You are moving in the right direction. [13:54.46]I look forward to seeing you in my office.

    [13:58.71]Sincerely

    [14:01.35]Teacher Counsellor

    [14:04.59]Listening page 71

[14:09.16]Listen to this talk by school counsellor and complete the outline.

[14:14.52]My name is Peter Smith I've been a school counsellor for about twelve years

    [14:22.56]It's my pleasure today,

[14:26.40]to tell you a little bit about school counseling at the secondary level.

[14:32.15]For counsellors, there are two main areas it focus.

[14:37.51]One is personal counseling and the other is academic counseling.

    [14:43.75]First of all,personal counseling,

[14:47.82]counseling of this kind aims at helping students to work out the personal problems

    [14:54.67]if there are any.

[14:57.31]Such as problems in their family life,

[15:01.07]or in their relationship with others.

[15:04.83]Programmes in smoking drunks, alcohol and driving

[15:10.68]are also run prevent the students from getting it's certain problems.

[15:16.25]Now,the second area is academic counseling,

[15:21.21]which are something to do with their studies or the further schooling

[15:26.67]If the students want to go for further study,

[15:30.82]and counsellor made discuss with subjects,

[15:34.97]and courses they should take and which they shouldn't.

[15:39.94]or if they're interested in jobs,

[15:44.09]and different kinds of work[15:47.62]and also job preparation programme to be discussed.

[15:52.45]It is always school counsellor's responsibility

[15:57.28]to give information and advice to students.

[16:01.52] And to point out things they may not thought about before.

[16:06.35]But decisions must be made by the students themselves.

[16:11.08]In this way,all the students will be thinking,

[16:15.75]and working very hard to solve own problem.
