    [-1:30.00]The story of Qiu Jin

    [-1:31.00]Qiu Jin was born in 1875 into a fairly wealthy family in Minhou, Fujian Province.

    [-1:32.00]She enjoyed riding horses and playing with swords as well as reading.

    [-1:33.00]Her family insisted that she receive a good education.

    [-1:34.00]Unlike most young women of her time,

    [-1:35.00]she ws able to meet other well-educated people on different ocasions.

    [-1:36.00]At the of twenty-one,Qiu Jin was maried to an older man

    [-1:44.00]In 1906,Qiu Jin returned to China.She started publishing Chinese Women,

    [-1:45.00]a revolutionary magazine that called for equal rights between men and women.

    [-1:46.00]The next year,she became head of the Shaoxing Datong College.

    [-1:47.00]She used the college as base for her anti-Qing Dynasty activities.

    [-1:48.00]In those days,

    [-1:49.00]many women in China were forced to have their feet bound at the age of five.

    [-1:50.00]This practive severly restricted women's freedom of movement

    [-1:51.00]and left them dependent on other people.

    [-1:52.00]Qiu Jin called on women to fight against this practice

    [-1:53.00]and gain financial independence through education

    [-1:54.00]and training in various professions.

    [-1:55.00]Qiu Jin believed it woould be possible for women to have to better future

    [-1:56.00]only when the corrupt Qing Dynasty was repaced by a new form of government.

    [-1:57.00]She joined forces with her male cousin Xu Xilin.

    [-1:58.00]They worked to unite many secret revolutionary societies

    [-1:59.00]to struggle together for the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty.

    [-2:-1.00]On July 15,1907,she was beheaded at Xuandingkou in Shaoxing.
