    [00:13.00]Yesterday,I gave a presentation in class about my student exchange to Canada.

    [00:14.00]I remembered many great times.I sure learned a lot,too!

    [00:15.00]Do you remember when we went snowmobiling on the lake behind your house?

    [00:16.00]It was so cold that day and we were trying to start a fire on the ice.

    [00:17.00]Remember when we had to walk in snow up to our things

    [00:18.00]to get more wood for the fire?

    [00:19.00]My classmates were surprised that your parents came with us

    [00:20.00]and spent the whole day playing in the snow.

    [00:21.00]I think families in Canada have more free time than families in China.

    [00:22.00]Yes,I noticed that when I visited China.

    [00:23.00]I really loved China.And not only because of the good food!

    [00:24.00]You have more history than we do in Canada.

    [00:25.00]I loved the old buildings and temples

    [00:26.00]and all the stories that made the places come alive.

    [00:27.00]In the Chinese countryside,like at the Great Wall,

    [00:28.00]I not only felt a connection to nature,but also a connection to the past.

    [00:29.00]I could understand the Chinese respect for ancestors a little better.

    [00:30.00]We don't experstand that as much in Canada.

    [00:31.00]Yes,between your culture and my culture many things are different,

    [00:32.00]and yet in some ways people are similar all over the world.

    [00:33.00]That's why we can be friends!

    [00:34.00]Travelling is a wonderful way to explore the differences and similarities.

    [00:43.00]rather than collect things.

    [00:44.00]Yeah,I know what you mean.When I came to Canada,

    [00:45.00]I was surprised to see how much stuff people had,

    [00:46.00]and how big the houses were,and how much space there was all around.

    [-1:-2.00]I am very excited,but a little nervous,too.

    [-1:25.00]Wow!I was so lucky to win trip around the world!

    [-1:26.00]I just arrived in London a few days ago,and I am having a great time.

    [-1:27.00]The city is huge;someone on the train told me there are 12 million people here,

    [-1:28.00]and I believe it! I have already lots of the major sights;

    [-1:29.00]the House of Parliament and Big Ben,Westminster Abbey and of course,

    [-1:30.00]Buckingham Palace.Buckingham palace is the home of Queen Elizabeth II

    [-1:31.00]and the rest of the royal family.

    [-1:32.00]It's magnificent!I also went to the Piccadilly circus

    [-1:33.00]and took a walk around Trafalgar Square.

    [-1:34.00]Being a tourist here can be quite expensive,

    [-1:35.00]but my friends and I have found a few ways to save money.

    [-1:36.00]Most restaurants,for example,are very costly,

    [-1:37.00]but the East Indian curry houses are quite reasonable.

    [-1:38.00]Not only that,but the food is delicious!Then,of course,

    [-1:39.00]there's the traditional English favourite:fish and chiips.

    [-1:40.00]My friend and I have been eating lots of this as well.

    [-1:41.00]For accommodation,I'm staying at a nice B&B on the West side of London.

    [-1:42.00]Travellers on a really tight budget stay in hostels,

    [-1:43.00]since they are the cheapest places to stay.

    [-1:44.00]Hostels usually have larger rooms with many beds inside,

    [-1:45.00]and travellers simply rent a bed for th night.

    [-1:46.00]There are hostels all over the world,including China,Li Ming!

    [-1:47.00]I met a girl here.She stayed at the Xi'an Shuyuan International Youth Hostel,

    [-1:48.00]and she had a wonderful time there!

    [-1:49.00]Well,Li Ming,that's about it for now!

    [-1:51.00]which is supposed to be just magnificent.

    [-1:55.00]Jan 30,2003 Hi Li Ming,

    [-1:56.00]Well I've made it safely to my second destinations:Cape Town,South Africa.

    [-1:57.00]What a different!First of all,it is so hot here!

    [-1:58.00]We're in the southern hemisphere,so while it's winter in the U.K.right now,

    [-1:59.00]it's summer here in South Africa.

    [-2:00.00]Did you know that South Africa has eleven official languages?

    [-2:-1.00]In addition to English,

    [-2:-2.00]people in different parts of the country

    [-2:-3.00]speak neat languages like Zulu,Xhosa,and Afrikaans.

    [-2:-4.00]in the streets of Cape Town,you hear mostly Afrikaans and Xhosa,

    [-2:-5.00]but of course,almost everyone speaks English as well.

    [-2:-6.00]The coolest thing about Cape Town

    [-2:-7.00]is that there's a mountain right in the middle of it!

    [-2:-8.00]It's called Table Mountain,because it looks just like a table.

    [-2:-9.00]You may have seen pictures of it before.

    [-2:10.00]A few days ago,I hiked to very top of Table mountain.

    [-2:11.00]The view from there was just amazing!

    [-2:12.00]You could look way out over the city to the Atlantic Ocean.

    [-2:13.00]It was just beautiful! [-2:14.00]Yesterday,I went on a tour to see great white sharks in the ocean.

    [-2:15.00]It was so exciting!A group of six of us met the tour guide in the morning,

    [-2:16.00]and he took us out on the boat.When we got far enough from the shore,

    [-2:17.00]the guide stopped the boat and put some meat in the ocean ot attract the sharks.

    [-2:18.00]After a few minutes,one came close to our boat.

    [-2:19.00]One by one,we got in the small cage at the end of the boat,

    [-2:20.00]which the guide lowered under the water so that we could see the shark.

    [-2:21.00]It was so big!I can't believe I was brave enough to get into that cage.

    [-2:22.00]Did you know that great white sharks have 3000 teeth?

    [-2:23.00]I can't wait to tell you more stories when I get back home.

    [-2:26.00]Hi Li Ming,Can you guess where I am now?"The Big Apple!"

    [-2:27.00]That's the nickname for New York City.

    [-2:28.00]I thought London was big,but New York is even bigger!

    [-2:29.00]There are 18 million people here.

    [-2:30.00]It's no wonder people call it"the Capital of the World"!

    [-2:31.00]I learned that New York is really like five cities in one:

    [-2:32.00]Manhattan,the Bronx,Brooklyn,Queens and Staten Island.

    [-2:33.00]I've spent most of my time in Manhattan[-2:34.00]since there's just so much to see there.

    [-2:35.00]I've walked down Broadway and around Times Square,

    [-2:36.00]and I even got to see the Empire State Building!

    [-2:37.00]Yesterday I went to se Radio City Music Hall,

    [-2:38.00]the biggest indoor theatre in the would!It was really incredible.

    [-2:39.00]Tomorrow,I'm planning to take a ferry boat from Manhattan to Staten Island.

    [-2:40.00]That ferry passes the Statue of Liberty!

    [-2:41.00]Do you know that building is over 100 years old?

    [-2:42.00]In 1886,it was given to the United States as a gift from France,

    [-2:43.00]in recognition of the friendship they built during the American Revolution.

    [-2:44.00]At 4'6''her nose is almost as tall as you,Li Ming!
