GRANDFATHER'S STORY

爷爷的故事

"Come and sit by my knee, Jane,

“简，过来坐在我的膝旁。

and grandfather will tell you a strange story.

爷爷给你讲一个神奇的故事。”

"One bright Summer day,

“一个明媚的夏日，

I was in a garden in a city, with a friend. "

我和一位朋友在一座城市花园里，

We rested underneath a fig tree.

坐在无花果树下休息，

The broad leaves were green and fresh.

大片的树叶绿而青。

"We looked up at the ripe, purple figs.

“我们抬头看着已经成熟的紫色无花果。

And what do you think came down through the branches of the fig tree over our heads?"

如果有东西从无花果树的树枝上掉到我们头上，你觉得会是什么？”

"Oh, a bird, grandfather, a bird!"

“噢，一只鸟，爷爷，那是一只鸟。”

said little Jane, clapping her hands.

简拍着手说。

"No, not a bird. It was a fish;

“不，不是一只鸟。我的小姑娘，是一条鱼，

a trout, my little girl."

一条鲑鱼。”

"Not a fish, grandfather!

“不是鱼，爷爷！

A trout come through the branches of a tree in the city?

鲑鱼从城里一颗树的树枝上掉下来？

I am sure you must be in fun."

我敢肯定您一定在开玩笑。”

"No, Jane, I tell you the truth.

“不，简，我告诉你的是真的。

My friend and I were very much surprised

to see a fish falling from a fig tree.

看到一条鱼从无花果树上掉下来，感到非常诧异。”

"But we ran from under the tree,

“不过当我们从树下跑出来时，

and saw a fishhawk flying,

看到一只鱼隼飞过，

and an eagle after him.

一只老鹰跟在它后面。”

"The hawk had caught the fish,

“隼抓住了这条鱼，

and was carrying it home to his nest,

并把它带回到自己的巢里，

when the eagle saw it and wanted it.

这时老鹰看到了那条鱼并想得到它。”

"They fought for it.

“他们为这条鱼打了起来。

The fish was dropped,

鱼掉下来了，

and they both lost it.

它们都没得到鱼。

So much for fighting!"

争斗才由此停止。”
