Nestled in the cool, refreshing Bedugul mountains of central Bali, the 157-hectare Bali Botanic garden is easily accessible during the day, about a 90-minute drive north of Denpasar city. The vast peaceful garden is a combination of green spaces, ornamental gardens, a unique collection of plants and the tropical forest located on the misty slopes of Tapak Hill. The garden was established on July 15, 1959 and is located about 1300 meters above sea level, overlooking Lake Bratan and the Ulun Danu Temple on the Tapak hillside.

More than 2,000 plant species are preserved in this giant garden, including plants from the mountains of eastern Indonesia: Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua. New plants are purchased from commercial nurseries, other botanical gardens, plant breeding programs and plant collection expeditions.

The greenhouse is home to a species of sugarcane orchid that can reach over seven meters tall and is considered the largest orchid species in the world. It only flowers under certain conditions and is so named due to its resemblance to sugarcane.
