《我一直工作在铁道上》是最流行的美国民歌之一。它最早是十九世纪三四十年代路易斯安娜州密西西比河南部修筑河堤的黑人工人们唱的《大堤曲》。随着筑大堤变为建铁路，这强有力的曲调被填上新词，成了密西西比州西部大多数爱尔兰铁路工人唱的一支歌。到1880年为止，各民族以及来自各国的工人们已经铺设了近十万英里的铁道，《我一直工作在铁道上》这支歌也已经传遍了38个州。这首歌的另一翻版《得克萨斯州的眼睛》被得克萨斯州大学用作正式校歌。其中以“黛娜，你别吹”开始的第二段是后来加进去的。以前各大学经常刊印歌本，而《我一直工作在铁道上》这首歌总是名列其中。
