Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s prime minister, said extra security screening measures were being introduced at the nation’s airports but advised travellers to go about their business “with confidence”.

Police in Australia say they have foiled more than a dozen terrorist attacks in recent years, including a planned Christmas Day attack on Melbourne in 2016 and a plot to kill police officers last year on Anzac Day, the April 25 public holiday to commemorate those in Australia and New Zealand who fought and died for their country.

More than a 100 people have left Australia in recent years to fight in Syria alongside terrorist organisations, including Islamic State, according to the authorities.

Andrew Colvin, Australian Federal Police commissioner, said the security agencies believed the proposed terrorist action against an aviation target was “Islamic-inspired terrorism”.
