    Ass一字的合成语颇丰。在修饰ass的形容词中,最常见的有big,fat,dumb,stupid 等,皆有贬意。Ass 当字首或字尾时,强化其前后之字,如 ass-kisser (拍马屁的人);当字尾时,成名词或形容词短语,如 jerk-ass (笨家伙、怪人),jerk-ass friends (古怪朋友);可能后随副词,成了副词短语,如 ass-backwards (前后乱了次序,搞颠倒了);后随形容词时,如 ass-deep,成了形容词短语,如 snow ass-deep to an elephant (很深的雪),如 ass-deep in drugs(毒瘾缠身),ass-deep in work(工作满堆)等;前加形容词,如 smart-ass(自作聪明的人),是名词合成语(compound noun),smart-ass reply(自作聪明的答复)是形容词短语等。 My ass(我),your ass(你),his ass (他),意近中文戏称的“在下”,“阁下”,“他老兄”,多用于祈使句(imperative)。My ass!当惊叹词时,可与aching,bleeding,bloody,dying,fucking,red,royal等形容词连用,以强化语气。On somebody’s ass是唠叨地骂某人或紧追某人不舍。Get on someone’s ass指某人某事使人烦恼不已;Get off(somebody’s)ass与get off(one’s)ass词义不同,前者是“不要骚扰,别骂某某”;后者叫人“别作懒骨头,要振作起来”。

    Have one’s finger up one’s ass 的have…up…亦可作get…out…,或with…up…;Your ass!当动词get的宾语时,如 get your ass in (out of here,或over)here!(阁下快给我进来/滚出去/过来!),以示“催人、令人”之意; kick ass 是美国学生讨论考试、音乐、电影、运动比赛、国际网络个人网页(personal home page)等常用的口头禅,意思视情形而定,请看例句。monkey’s ass, rat’s ass是戏称,在加强情调,详情请看例句。 Ass 的避讳字眼有butt,buttocks, behind,derriere, fanny,rear end,rump,tail,tush等,其中butt,tail二字虽是避讳字,但一般人仍视之为粗俗字眼。Ass 一字及其合成语近年来大众媒体虽渐渐接受,但因语气粗俗,正式社交场所仍忌使用,仕人淑女尤然。

    Ass 用以——骂人,咒事,训斥,讽刺

    1. ass,an ass 蠢驴

    A. I let him use my computer, and he breaks it!

    我的电脑借给他用,他却把它弄坏了。

    B. What an ass. Make him pay.

    真驴,要他赔。

    2. asshole 愚笨无能之辈,卑鄙的家伙,可恶的人;asshole也可当形容词,后跟名词,意为“可恶的”

Get ahold of yourself.3 Stop crying.”I wanted to say,“I’m not crying, asswipe! Recognize that. Get over that. And move on [to] the next fucking4 line.”

    2. the reader 念剧本时的对口搭配(plays opposite role)。

    3. Get ahold of yourself 镇静一点。ahold亦作hold。

    4. fucking 此处充当加强语气的低俗形容词,相当于“他妈的”,“真是差劲!……”。

    4. get off one’s ass 振作起来

    A. He’s not willing to work,and isn’t interested in finding a job.

    他既不愿工作,又对找工作没兴趣。

    B. Tell him to get off his ass and start looking.

    跟他讲,要振作起来,去找工作。

    A. Get off your ass and hit the books1. Finals are next week.

    振作起来,用功看书吧!下周就期末考了。

    B. I don’t feel like studying.2

    我不想读书。

    注:

    1. hit the books (俚)(为准备考试)而加油用功。

    2. don’t feel like (口语英文)表示“不喜欢”,是及物动词短语,习惯后跟动名词studying当宾语。有的语法学家叫它prepositional verb。

    5. get off somebody’s ass 别骂,不要骚扰

    A. The coach used to yell and scream at his players,pushing them to raise the bar.1

    以前教练总对队员大声吼叫,强迫他们百尺竿头,更进一步。

    B. Once he discovered that that only upset them,he got off their asses.

    一旦发现如此施压搞乱大家情绪后,就没再骂人了。

    注:

    1. raise the bar bar指跳高用的横竿,全句意为“努力加油!百尺竿头,更进一步!”

    6. get on one’s ass 使(某人)紧张或烦恼

    A. His wife’s constant nagging really gets on his ass.

    他太太唠叨不休,使老兄他烦恼不已。

    B. If he’d start paying more attention to her and the kids,maybe she’d quit.

    他要是能多关心太太和孩子的话,太太也许就不再唠叨了。

    7. have one’s head up(in)one’s ass;get one’s head out of one’s ass 心不在焉,漫不经心;愚不可及

    A. How come the computer doesn’t work?

    怎么电脑不转了?

    B. You must have had your head up your ass1 when you installed it.

    你安装时,一定心不在焉。

    注:

    1. must have had your head up your ass must+完成式是对过去事务的判断。此处是断定过去的不当而加以责备,如说成“You always have your head up your ass when you do something.”指“你至今做什么事仍是心不在焉”,也是责备。“Head in his ass”和“head up his ass”相同,表示“不用心”,“不卖力”,动词可用have或get,如下例“Tell him to get his head out of his ass.”(叫他不要再心不在焉),表示命令、力劝,已不是责备。

    A. If you believe his bizarre story,it’s because you have your head up your ass.

    此句是条件句,是叙事(narration),往往有前提,有结论,而非命令。

    两句中的get与stop都是命令、唆使、鼓励或劝导(imperative),用动词原形(root form),因对象是第二人称,故省去you。

    8. have one’s finger (thumb) in/up one’s ass,get your finger (thumb) out of your ass 闲待着,慢吞吞地,分心状

    A. You,with your thumb in your ass.1 Hurry up!

    喂!你怎么那般慢吞吞地!快一点吧!

    B. Who,me?

    你指的是我吗?

    注:

    1. with your thumb in your ass 是介词所形成的短语,在此处当形容词用,描述主语的神态,是主语补足语。

    A. He played with his finger up his ass,1 and missed the cut.

    他打球时分心,结果未晋级。

    B. Now he’ll have to wait till next year.

    这么一来,他要等到明年再来了。

    注:

    1. with his finger up his ass 是介词短语,在本句中当副词用,描述play时的状况(manner)。

    2. Kiss someone’s ass则为“卑躬屈膝”的动词短语,如“He get used to kissing his boss’s ass.”(他惯于大拍老板马屁)

    10. make an ass of oneself 做傻事,出洋相,成为笑柄

    A. I’m going to the graduation party tonight.

    今天晚上我要参加毕业晚会。

    16. a pain in the ass 令人厌烦的人或事

    17. pull something out of one’s ass 无中生有;险胜

    1. be going+不定式 是英文句中的将来式,英文动词本身只有现在式及过去式,将来式的句子要靠助动词(shall,will等)及某些结构来帮忙(be going to, be+v-ing,be about to,be to+v.)。在条件句中前提句的现在动词也代表未来(If he comes tomorrow…)。当然现在动词代表未来的情况也有,如 Tomorrow is Sunday. 但这情形不多。

    1. out the ass 在句中是副词短语,形容动词paying的程度。

    1. B句之My ass或为虚情假意(mock sympathy)。bleeds for在此含有“关我屁事”的意味,bleed for也有“为……而伤心难过”,又“为……而流血”,如 Soldiers who bled for their country (殉国的军人)。另“为……而被榨取的费用”,如 bleed for a hotel room during peak tourist season (观光盛季中被榨取过高的旅馆费)。

    1. accuse…of… 控告“某人”关于“某事”。要记住固定用介词“of”。另一“控告”英文字Charge,就要用Charge him with murder,二句均可改被动。

    1. hack into 违法取得或偶尔擅改电脑系统所存资料。

    3. Quit being a smart-ass Quit是及物动词,“停止”之意,being a smart-ass是“动名词短语”,意指“聪明的状况”,当quit的宾语。
