TUNE: A SOUTHERN SONG
On high the Silver River veers;
On earth all curtains are drawn down.
My mat and pillow grow chilly, wet with tears,
I rise to take off my silk gown,
Wondering how old night has grown.
Small is the green lotus on the robe I caress,
And sparse the leaves embroidered in thread of gold.
In old-time weather still I wear my old-time dress,
Only my heart feels cold
And the mood I’m in is different from that of old.
