United Airlines and its mechanics【机械工】union have settled their contract dispute averting(1) a strike threatened for tomorrow.
The tentative(2) deal allows the mechanics to vote on cost cutting moves United planned for later this year. And includes the first raise since 1994. Union leaders are recommending the agreement to their members who will vote on it in two weeks. Southwest Airlines is hanging out the help wanted sign for 4000 new workers this year, Southwest was the only major U.S carrier【航空公司】 not to cut(3) jobs after September 11,and it is also the only major carrier still making money.
IBM reportedly【据报道】plans to start releasing more details of its financial status. The Wall Street Journal says it is in response to investor demands for more accounting disclosures(4) following the Enron scandal【丑闻】.
