Genetically modified foods are foods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. These techniques have allowed the introduction of new crop traits as well as a far greater control over the food's genetic structure than previous methods such as selective breeding and mutation breeding. China has become the world's largest soybean importer, buying about 60% of the globally traded soybeans. Most of those imported soybeans are genetically modified varieties. In China, there is a fierce public debate on genetically modified food.
