China aims to raise its global competitiveness in the transport sector by setting up transport networks with wider coverage and higher speed, according to a document jointly released by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council.

2017年，党的十九大明确提出建设交通强国的宏伟目标，吹响了交通强国建设的号角，为未来一段时间的交通建设奠定了总的基调。2018年全国交通运输工作会议就达到什么样的水平才算交通强国、交通强国该如何建设等问题，明确了未来几年我国交通运输行业发展的主要方向。2019年9月19日《交通强国建设纲要》出炉，明确了我国的发展目标：到2020年，完成决胜全面建成小康社会交通建设任务和“十三五”现代综合交通运输体系发展规划各项任务，为交通强国建设奠定坚实基础;从2021年到本世纪中叶，分两个阶段推进交通强国建设;到2035年，基本建成交通强国。
