    A Flowering Tree

    Hsi Muren

How can you be made to meet me

When I am at my loveliest  For this

I have beseeched the Buddha for five hundred years

Praying before his image that in life we might love

A tree the Buddha thus made me

Growing by the road that you are bound to pass

In the sunlight I am carefully bedecked with flowers

Each blossom a hope from a previous life

Please listen as you near me

    Those shaking leaves

Are the eagerness with which I have awaited you

But when you pass without a glance

O, friend  T’is not the petals that

Fall covering the ground behind you

    But rather my stricken heart

    (John J. S. Balcom 译)

    One Blossoming Tree

    Xi Muyong/Hsi Mu-Yung

How can I let you see me

when I am at my prettiest  for this

I prayed five hundred years in front of the Buddha

for our earthly destiny to be fulfilled

So the Buddha turned me into a tree

growing by the roadside where you go by

I shyly send out my blossoms under the sun

every flower is a wish of my previous lives

When you walk near me, please listen carefully

for leaves in their trembling is the passion I wait for

and if you go by not knowing

what falls to the ground as you pass

ah my friend, it is not the petals letting go

but pieces of my wilted heart

(Julia C. Lin and Tan Lin 译)

    A Flowering Tree

    Hsi Muren

How could I let you see me

    At my loveliest.  For this

Before Buddha, I have prayed for five hundred years,

Asking Him to grant us such a destiny.

Then Buddha transfigures me into a tree

Growing by the road that you are sure to take.

    Under the sun, blooming ceremoniously,

Each flower being the hope from my previous life.

When you approach me  please listen carefully to

Those trembling leaves that are my passion with which I await you

And when finally you walk by without a glance

Those fallen pieces that cover up the ground behind you –

Oh my friend   – are not simply flower petals.

They are the withered pieces of my heart.

    (Chang Shu-Li 译)

    A Tree in Full Blossom

    Xi Murong

Trying hard to let you meet me

In my prime of beauty, and only for this,

I have been praying to Buddha for five hundred years,

To let us form worldly bonds of affections.

So Buddha has made me become a tree,

And grow on the roadside you’d pass by,

Which is prudently in full blossom in the sun,

And every flower is the hope of my previous life.

When you approach me – oh, just listen carefully

To the quivering leaves, my expectant ardent love,

But finally, when you heedlessly pass it by,

What have fallen behind you on the whole ground,

My dear friends, are not petals of flowers,

But the withered pieces of my broken heart!

    (黄遵洸 译)

    A Blossoming Tree

    Hsi Muren

How to make you encounter me

at my most beautiful moment? For this,

I have already prayed in front of Buddha for five hundred years,

praying to Him to let us make a bond in this world.

Buddha thus has transformed me into a tree,

growing on the roadside where you are required to pass through,

under the sunlight, I discreetly blossom all over with flowers,

all the blossoms are my preexistence yearnings.

When you approach, please listen carefully.

Those trembling leaves are my awaiting passion.

But when you eventually pass by without seeing,

Behind your back, fallen all over the ground,

Ah, friend, those are not petals,

    but my broken heart.
