As early as the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee in 2013, the top leader Xi Jinping pointed out that we should realize that the country's mountains, rivers, forests, land and lakes form a community of shared life.

早在2013年十八届三中全会时，习近平主席就指出，我们要认识到，山水林田湖是一个生命共同体。

生命共同体(community of shared life)是一种互相依存的结合，也是整体和个体辩证关系的浓缩，在环境保护和生态打造方面，表现得尤为突出。我们应该把地球看作一个生命共同体，尽我们最大的努力(do our upmost)保护环境，保持生态系统(conserve the ecosystem)。人类和所有其他生物都在命运共同体中紧密关联，任何以生态和环境为代价换得的短期发展(short-sighted development at the cost of the environment)最终都将付出沉重的代价。

今年3月的博鳌亚洲论坛还提出过“命运共同体”(community of common destiny)的主题，指的是在追求本国利益时兼顾他国合理关切，在谋求本国发展中促进各国共同发展(common development)。
