During the Eastern Han Dynasty, earthquakes occurred frequently. Through a series of careful observations of earthquakes, Zhang Heng invented the seismograph in 132 A.D. It was the first instrument in the world used to identify and determine the direction of earthquakes.

The seismograph was cast with eight dragons on its surface, and each dragon's mouth contained a bronze ball. Beneath the eight dragons on the ground were eight bronze toads with their heads raised, and the open mouths of the toads coincided with the mouths of the dragons. When an earthquake occurred, the dragon facing the direction of the earthquake would open its mouth, and the ball in its mouth would fall into the mouth of the toad, automatically indicating the direction of the earthquake.
