81. Meeting at Night

The gray sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

81　夜中幽会

灰蒙蒙的海洋，黑黝黝的大地，

黄灿灿的新月又大又低；

受惊的细浪卷起一个个火环，

在沉睡中跳得好不欢畅。

我推着小船进入小海湾，

把船停在泥污的沙地上。

然后沿海水飘香的沙滩行走一英里，

再跨过三块麦地，一个农庄便在眼底；

窗玻璃上轻轻一磕，随即迅速一擦，

点燃的火柴喷吐火苗，呈一片蓝色；

又惊又喜中发出一声轻轻的呼叫，

那声音比两颗心的撞击还微小。

[1]罗伯特·勃朗宁（Robert Browning，1812—1889），与丁尼生齐名的诗人。生于伦敦的一个中产阶级家庭。6岁开始模仿拜伦写诗，后来转向学习雪莱。早期的创作很少受到读者关注，直至1846年，才突然闻名英国，但不是因为他的诗，而是因为他与当时最著名的女诗人伊丽莎白·巴莱特私奔。勃朗宁得到学界认可，以及确立崇高的诗人地位都在死后。他对英语诗歌最大的贡献是创造了一种新体裁：戏剧独白。诗集有《戏剧抒情诗》《戏剧罗曼史和抒情诗》《男男女女》《指环与书》等。
