[1]杰弗雷·乔叟（Geoffrey Chaucer，约1343——1400），生于伦敦的一个商人家庭，当过海关监督、法官和下院议员。曾出使法、意等国。著有长诗《特罗勒斯与克丽西德》和《坎特伯雷故事集》。从他开始，英国文学真正步入作家创作的时代。17世纪作家德莱顿称他为“英国诗歌之父”。由于《坎特伯雷故事集》具有高度的现实意义，后人又称他为“现实生活的诗人”（a poet of real life）。
