89 side和“腰”
原 文：
The village is on the side of the mountain.
原 译：
村庄在山边上。/ 村庄在山那边。/ 村庄在山脚下。
辨 析：
将三句原译回译为英文（回译——back translation——是检查翻译是否正确的有效方法之一），分别应该是：The village is alongside the mountain (at the hill). / The village is beyond the mountain (at the other side of the mountain). / The village is at the foot of the mountain. 所以三个原译都不对。如译成“村庄在山坡上”似乎也不好，“山坡”总给人以倾斜的感觉，“一头羊在山坡上吃草”或“扬水站建在山坡上”完全可以被接受，但是一个村庄怎么也得有好几户人家吧，房子不可能都造在斜坡上。如果译成：村庄在半山腰，倒是讲得过去，这也是原句正确的译文。（半山腰一定有一块较大的平地，那里盖了许多房子。）一般汉英词典提供的“腰”英语是waist和the small of the back, 没有提到side一词。“半山腰”的英文是half way up the mountain，好像着重在一半的高度。而一般英汉词典的side词条下也只有“（身体的）侧边”和“胁”。但再好的词典也不可能包罗万象，词典上没有，并不等于side 不能译成“腰”。等腰三角形的两个“腰”就是side(s)。又如He broke his sides with laughter. 中的sides其实也指“腰”。（只不过译成汉语最好按习惯说法译成“他笑破了肚皮”，就好像“笑掉大牙”一般译成laugh one's head off而不是laugh one's teeth off。）可见翻译的时候选词一定要看上下文。还说这个“腰 ”字，“挺起腰”是straighten one's back，“弯腰”只需说bend down就行，无须（也不能）加上waist（waist是很小的一部分，无法bend）或 body 的字样，而“扭伤了腰”中的“腰”指的是“腰肌”，其英文是lumbar muscles， 或者源自拉丁文的 psoas（不能说waist muscle）。至于“腰里无钱”中的“腰”实际上指“腰包”，英文应译做with no money in one's purse / wallet。
