辨 析：
这个译文隐含的意思是“他和他弟弟一样聪明”，这就错了。有人会问：His brother is wiser than he.的意思是“他弟弟比他聪明”，那么其否定式当然表示相反的意思“他弟弟不比他更聪明”，这样译怎么还会错呢？
英语中有许多否定词，not和no是最常用的两个，但是前者是副词，后者是形容词，而从程度上说，后者否定的意思更重。确切地说，一般否定句应该用not，His brother is wiser than he的否定形式是His brother is not wiser than he，不是 His brother is no wiser than he. 前者的含义是两个人都聪明，但不分上下，弟弟并不比哥哥更聪明。后者用了形容词no，从语法上说，no是修饰wiser的；从意思上说，no加上形容词或副词的比较级，是一种修辞方式，其用意则是从反面着眼的，所以no wiser的意思着眼于“笨”，隐含的意思是“哥哥并不聪明／很笨，而弟弟也好不到哪里去”，所以，原句应该译为：他弟弟和他一样笨。还有一个句型可以表示这种意思：“none the + 比较级”。所以原句也可以写成：His brother is none the wiser than he. 而且意思更强烈。
